The Skin You're In: A Moment with Nicole DalPorto

written by Stacey Lindsay

The Skin You're In is a series of brief contemplations on caring for our bodies, minds, and selves from people we admire. This week, we're featuring Nicole DalPorto, founder of Veroque Botanicals, who offers her take on caring for our skin.

Nicole, take us back to when you first fell in love with beauty and skincare.

I studied art history and then later graphic design, which I was doing for work as I lived in Europe for 10 years. I was always in big cities and fast-paced environments. When my mother became sick, I moved back home where I was surrounded by nature, water, and a slower pace of life. My mother sadly passed—it's been five years now—and she was why I started having a passion for skincare. She always had the most beautiful glow to her skin, and she didn't do much. She had a few products and a simple routine, which instilled in me that simplicity is key to nourishing and caring for your skin. She always knew what I needed. If I had problems with dryness or acne, she would say, 'Here's what you need.' But it was all simple. I saw how gentle ingredients from nature can have such an effect.

There are endless skincare options today, especially items that market women growing older. What do you feel is most important to remember when it comes to caring for our skin?

We are bombarded with marketing campaigns and big stores with shelves and shelves of different products, which can be overwhelming. The biggest thing is to really understand your skin. Know what it needs. Going directly to the source of someone knowledgeable, like an esthetician or dermatologist, can help you find something specific for you and your skin’s needs rather than going for that ‘miracle serum.’ Touching on simplicity, again, I don't believe we need a 12-step skincare routine. Find what you need and be consistent.

The ocean is evident in your brand, Veroque. What does the sea mean to you?

When you see the water, it makes the day better. I think back to when I started Veroque, and I remember the calm I felt being surrounded by the ocean at home with my mother. There is such healing from the water. I wanted to translate that into our products and create that same soothing sensation for our skin. Algae, seaweed, and marine botanicals have been well-researched and well-received in the skincare industry. This all came together in a nourishing product.

We want our products to offer a moment in your day so you can take time for yourself and nourish your skin. And hopefully, you will feel that calming effect.
